Anthony King

Student 1956-63

 

Anthony King was born in Westport in 1938, becoming a member of a family prominent in the commercial and civic life of the town. He attended local national schools and the the diocesan boarding school, St. Jarlath's College in Tuam. He entered Maynooth in 1956 to study for priestly service in the Archdiocese of Tuam, student Arts and Philosophy taking a B.A. in Classics in 1959. Following four years of divonity studies (including Theology, Scripture, Canon Law and Sociology) he was ordained priest in the college chapel in June 1963. Following further studies for his Higher Diploma in Education he was on the staff of St. Jarlaths until 1970, when he was appointed curate in the parish of Westport, becoming administrator in 1980. In 1993 he was appointed Parish Priest of Athenry, Co. Galway, where he served until retirement in 2014. An accomplished traditional musician, he has written for local publications and was for a number of years President of Westport Show.
